Michael Atkins, Former custodian starts job as principal.
A man who started as a custodian in Denver’s school system has just become a principal.
Michael Atkins told KUSA his road has been tough at times.
When he was in elementary school, he formed a relationship with his second grade teacher who encouraged him to do more. In middle school, though, things got tough for Atkins.
At 21, he became a custodian for Denver Schools and says he took pride in every room he cleaned.
It was shortly after that he ran into that old second grade teacher. She helped get him into a classroom and to become a teacher.
He worked his way up through the ranks and is now starting his job as a principal at the elementary school in the neighborhood where he grew up.
